To Read or to Read...What Should I Read?

My Students

Have you ever been in a classroom where there was no class library? It would be very hard to master any reading standard without any books in the classroom for the students to use. I want to fill my room with rich literature for my students.

I currently teach fifth grade discovery, average, and below average students.

They attend a school in Georgia that is three years old. The majority of my students come from a very poor home. Most of the homes do not have much if not any literature for the children to read. Most of my students come from homes that can not afford to purchase adequate school supplies for them throughout the year. Many of my students enjoy reading fiction and nonfiction books. I want to give each child the opportunity to find "their just right book" during the school year.

My Project

Having a classroom library full of rich, grade level fiction and nonfiction literature will provide many opportunities for learning in my classroom. I want to give each child the opportunity to not only meet the current Georgia reading and writing standards, but to excel. These books will be used for guided reading groups, author studies, and literature circles. They will have the opportunity to improve their vocabulary skills, fluency skills, reading comprehension, writing skills, and enhance social studies standards. They will work in whole group, small groups, and individually with me throughout the year using these books. Reading and writing go hand in hand, so improving their reading will also improve their writing skills. These books will be used to also teach English and writing skills. Using literature to teach reading, English, and write will help students make the connection that authors of the books they read understand and use correct English and the writing process.

I want my students to leave me at the end of the year with a love for reading and writing.

I firmly believe the only way to do that is to help them find "their just right book", a book that they fall in love with, a book that lights their personal fire for reading. Classroom libraries give perfect opportunities for this reading magic to happen every day! Across Five Aprils and The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle are wonderful examples of literature that can inspire students to love reading!
