This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Play Ball! To many of us, the phrase evokes pleasant memories of playing catch with dad or cheering as your team makes the World Series. My students have few warm connections to baseball--their families come from Mexico and Central America, where soccer is king.

My students are mostly immigrants and first-generation Americans.

While their spoken English has grown fluent by third grade, they still struggle with the academic language needed to read and write in every subject. P.E. is a chance for my kids to use their other abilities and take a break from the indoor work that can make them feel restless and frustrated! My class loved the P.E. units I've taught so far on four-square, kickball, basketball and soccer. They've learned techniques and skills specific to each game, as well as sportsmanship and teamwork. However, they're hungry to explore something new. They know I am a huge S.F. Giants fan, and many have started asking: When do we start learning to play baseball?

My Project

The biggest hurdle for a P.E. unit on baseball has been a lack of baseball gloves. We could get by with one bat and one ball, if need be. But to learn to play well, every child needs a mitt! An influx of brightly colored, kid-sized gloves will entice even my most reluctant athletes to learn how to field and throw. Additionally, this quality equipment can be shared by multiple classes and will last for years to come.

Our district's athletic programs have been cut and cut again, so that few students will have an opportunity to play team sports in their school career.
