The Science of Common Core: The Solar System and More
My students need action oriented, hands-on manipulatives to aid in the active learning of science objectives standardized by new common core instructional requirements.
Tell me and I'll forget; show me and I may remember; involve me and I'll understand. This Chinese proverb relates a universal truth in classrooms. These hands-on activity boxes will generate enthusiasm for learning newly adopted common core science objectives, previously not taught in 3rd grade.
Our school is a multi-cultural, Title I school, located in Eastern North Carolina.
This is an area of high poverty, where students are at risk of falling behind or find themselves already behind academically. Several of my students come from single parent homes or homes with a secondary caregiver, with limited home reinforcement of curriculum objectives. For this reason, it is vital that every second of the students classroom instruction be engaging and interactive. Under these conditions my students retention of classroom instruction objectives is most effectively realized.
My Project
Interactive and engaging classroom instruction involves students in the learning process by allowing hands-on activities to take center stage. With the adoption of Common Core, new science objectives have been added to third grade curriculum requirements. As a result, our classroom needs hands-on instructional resources. The requested Lakeshore Science Resource Kits include the necessary resources our students need to learn about topics in the following areas: Landforms and Mapping - compare the structures of Earth's surface using models and 3D diagrams, Force and Motion - understand motion and the factors that affect motion, Matter - structure, properties and states, and Solar System - understanding major components and patterns. In addition, to the experimental component of these kits, they include cross-curricular activities including: reading comprehension, vocabulary building, writing prompts, and more. These activities will "bring the instruction to life" for my students.
Donations to this request will have a huge impact upon the lives of the students in my classroom.
At present, our instructional resources, for the added 3rd grade science requirements, include textbook reading and supplementary materials I am able to bring into the classroom. The hands-on activities made possible by these resource kits will involve the students in their instruction, providing a sense of accomplishment, as experiments and activities reinforce classroom instruction.
