This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Oh, the places you'll go!" -Dr. Seuss
My wish for my Kindergarten students is that they will be lifelong travelers on the road of learning. Technology allows them to go so many places, prepares them for the future, and grows thinking and ideas. My students would benefit from access to child friendly technology. My students need 3 iPads and 3 heavy duty protective cases with screen protection. They also need 6 headphones and 3 headphone splitters to share the use of the iPads.
My school is made up primarily of low income students.
Many students do not have access to WiFi, Internet or updated technology at home. Many students come from families that struggle to purchase basic school supplies. I teach about 50 Kindergarten students every day in a morning and afternoon group.
My students are learning to speak English. My students come to school with varying levels of language. Some are non-English speakers, and some can carry on basic conversations in English. All of my students are excited to come to school and learn! I teach all the same curriculum components in the same format as the regular Kindergarten classes including reading, writing, phonics and math.
Although my students are still learning English, I expect my students to reach the same promotion standards in English as all of the other regular Kindergarten students. They can do it! My school has high standards and we work hard to reach our goals every day!
My Project
I use a wide variety of resources to help my students learn including read-a-louds, songs, chants and small group instruction. I would love to integrate technology to improve learning in reading, writing, math and English. I would use the iPads in a variety of ways to benefit their learning. Students could listen to songs and stories read aloud, practice words, alphabet, and math skills using apps and read appropriate level texts.
In addition, students are required to use a web based reading program. The program is the sole benchmark assessment for BOY, and is part of the benchmark at EOY determining promotion. Students learning English need lots of opportunity to practice on this program in order become familiar with the language and vocabulary and build English. Frequent practice builds alphabet, word knowledge and reading level. I would use the iPads to get more students using the program each day to practice, learn and improve their reading as well as their English language skills.
The project result seems simple.
It will allow my students greater access to modern, updated, child friendly technology which they do not otherwise have. But the reach far surpasses that. My students will be more engaged and participate more in their learning. They will be excited to try, practice and master new skills. They will improve their English language. All of this will lead them to see themselves as strong capable problem solvers as they learn. They will become learners who can take on challenges and succeed!
