My Students

We love using computers. We connect with partners around the world, create amazing projects, run book clubs, etc. We have 10 year old laptops that are almost impossible to use. Keys are missing, they are very slow, they shut down all the time. We need working computers.

My students are fourth graders from Long Island.

This class is very multicultural, very enthusiastic about learning, and very anxious to have better equipment to use. Our K-5 elementary school is facing, as all schools in New York are, massive budget cuts, completely eliminating our technology budget. We need help!

My Project

I have chosen a pc notebook that has much memory and runs quickly. This will be able to handle the creation of wikis and videos, editing of audio files and connecting through chat rooms and Skype. My students are 21st century students who live in a 21st century world, using 20th century computers. We desperately need an update. Maybe I can help them by getting one computer at a time.

Right now, my students are more frustrated by our laptops than they are enthusiastic to use them.

So no matter how exciting our project is, they just moan while they wait for their laptop to load, wait to see if the battery will stay charged, wait to see if the computer will remain on and connected. I spend much of my project time fixing computers. The children spend much of their time waiting for a fix. New laptops will be invaluable to our program.
