The Credits Roll Across The Screen

My students need 3 graphing calculators for classroom usage.

Ms. Young Julius L Chambers High School
Charlotte, NC Grades 9-12

How can students successfully learn if the necessary tools are not provided for their education? I have the pleasure of teaching three Technical Math II courses at a public high school to 9th through 12th graders. The school serves a population of approximately 1,840 students of which 68% are African-American, 7% Caucasian, 19% Hispanic, 6% Asian, American-Indian or other backgrounds. The school also has over 55% of students participating in the free/reduced lunch program. The majority of my students are in the 11th and 12th grades. This math class is one of the last classes they will need to take in order to fulfill their graduation requirements.

In my Technical Math II class, I am faced with the challenge of not having enough graphing calculators for the students to use during the instructional period. My students consistently miss out on in-class and assessment practice, and usually take longer to complete projects and assignments. My students are trying to tackle topics such as trigonometric functions, graphing quadratic equations and creating lists of statistical data without the use of technology. This is very difficult for my students, especially my Technical Math inclusion class. The Technical Math inclusion class especially needs these supplies as there are 7 students in the class who have learning disabilities that require extra attention and resources. I have also found that a lot of my students are visual learners and need to see the work they are doing. One good way for them to understand how to graph a quadratic function is to see it first and discover the characteristics of the function. This is not possible when all students do not have access to a calculator or can not provide one for themselves due to family financial issues.

That's why I need your help. Providing the students with graphing calculators will give them the extra advantage of understanding the information given in class. Each student would be able to follow along in class and complete examples as I guide them. The students would also be able to develop a greater sense of independence with their work which would definitely boost their overall confidence with math.

Please help me make a difference in the lives of my students. Your help will ensure that my students learn the skills now that will allow them to continue to build a better future for themselves tomorrow.
