My Students

A big task in middle school health is to teach students about the dangers of drugs and alcohol. My students have a lot of information about alcohol and other drugs from the media, their friends, their parents and I try to give them the facts!

My middle school students live in a rural part of upstate New York.

Our county has among the highest rates of tobacco use and my students are exposed to lots of alcohol use as well. My students are vibrant and full of questions. They become extremely engaged in my current lessons about alcohol and I have some great activities to help teach concepts about the depressant qualities of alcohol. The kids really get into the discussion about alcohol in class and eat up the information.

My Project

The materials that I am requesting will give me even more hands-on ways to teach my students about alcohol and other drugs. Interactive materials go a long way toward student understanding and a bingo game, question and answer ball and situation cards will help my students to interact with me and with each other to find out more information about alcohol and other drugs.

My students are just reaching young adulthood.

They are beginning to be faced with peer pressure to try or to use alcohol and other drugs and see messages in the media constantly about how drinking is "cool." The more ways I can teach them the ACTUAL facts about alcohol, and the more non-threatening ways I can come up with to do that, the better!
