This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I remember a time when elementary teachers taught all students equally instead of differentiating their instruction to meet the needs of the students. The world of technology has opened up amazing opportunities for us to do just that and the apps available on the iPad make learning a fun adventure!

For my students, the bare necessities are luxuries.

Items such as shoes and breakfast are not always easy to come by for them. Despite this, we teach the most amazing, motivated, and inspiring group of students who come from very low income households and families who often don't speak English. These children do not see or even understand the obstacles they face now and may continue to face in the future. They are so happy to just be at school and their love of learning inspires me every day.

My Project

I am asking for eight Apple iPads. In my classroom, I want to provide my students with not only the bare necessities, but with the luxuries they do not have at home. I want to inspire them through the use of technology and I want them to have a variety of mediums through which to learn. iPads will allow my students to read virtual books, to search the Internet from their desks when they do not understand a word or idea, and will simply provide them with a new and amazing form of technology. One very exciting aspect of the iPad is the availability of programs approved for RTI interventions, to be used with students who are far below grade level. I've seen students in other classrooms use these interactive programs and I am amazed by the progress they can make. I want all of my students to have this opportunity.

I know I've said it before, but I just can't stress enough the challenges these students face outside of the classroom.

Many of them come from homes where no English is spoken and they will be the first generation English speaker in their family. The learning opportunities that I can create with the use of these iPads will be a huge factor in motivating my students and inspiring a life long love of learning. That love of learning will lead them out of their life of poverty to success!
