Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The majority of my students live at or below the poverty line, are English Language Learners, and are significantly below grade-level in reading and math. Their smiles, however, would tell you a different story: one of hope and the desire for success.

My school is in a farm environment in California.

100% of the school is on free-reduced lunch and are English Language Learners. The community as a whole values education, but there are not enough resources to support the diverse needs of my students. Many of the parents are farm workers and work hard to ensure their child's needs are met. This makes learning time at school even more valuable, since they often receive little support on schoolwork at home. With recent budget cuts, class sizes are increasing significantly this year and we are not getting stipends to buy school supplies. I have a Smartboard but no computer to make the best use of it. This makes it quite challenging to make sure my students learning needs are being met. It is difficult for me to model during lessons, or teach procedures to such a large group of students with no computer connected to the Smartboard. I need tools to support learning in my classroom and give a better use to the existing technology.

My Project

I see the tool I am requesting as being especially helpful in supporting my students as readers and writers. By being able to project books, model texts, or student work, my students will have the opportunity to take more ownership in their own development as readers and writers. I also expect our new tool to make a profound impact on teaching math, since we will be able to model using strategies in front of the entire class. I am confident that our new computer will make learning much more meaningful and accessible to all my students. I want each of my students to be able to experience success as the readers, writers, mathematicians, and scientists that they are. They deserve to have meaningful learning experiences. Please, help me to make this a reality!
