Teaching Computer Aided Design

My students need 2 computers and 2 monitors so they can learn CAD and use it to design robots for the FIRST Robotics Competition.

My Students

I mentor an amazing team of students in the FIRST Robotics Competition. My students need your help to expand their 21st century STEM skills to include computer aided drafting and 3D modeling. Next year, I want them to design and build a robot that can compete with the best from around the world.

My students are members of a robotics team in a high school in Georgia.

Our school is urban and very diverse with a rich mix of students from across the cultural, ethnic, and socio-economic spectrum. Our team is very proud of the fact that close to 50% of our team are girls. As a FIRST Robotics team, we don't just build robots. We are passionate about inspiring other students to pursue STEM aspirations. We exhibit at elementary and middle schools. We host tournaments at our school. We train and mentor younger students from across the city. This group of students is a quirky, passionate team that embraces all students. We work hard, strive for excellence, and have a lot of fun!

My Project

I have requested two computers and two monitors. These computers will primarily be used by my students for computer aided design (CAD) and 3D modeling. Using these tools, students can design mechanical parts and assemblies, as well as virtually test their prototypes. My students will tackle difficult problems and design innovative, creative solutions. Computer aided design allows them to try out a solution virtually without using consumable resources. In the 21st century, parts are designed on a computer using 3D modeling and then fabricated using computer aided machining techniques like 3D printers and CNC milling. Everything from everyday household items to sophisticated robotics components are designed and made in this way. Being able to work with these tools in high school gives my students a major advantage in college and beyond. Adequate computer hardware is a basic need for students who what to learn computer aided design and machining.

These computers and monitors will make it possible for more students to learn computer aided design and for more students to be engaged in the design process for our team's FIRST robot.

Students will collaborate to solve a difficult problem and learn what is possible through hard work and persistence. Our team has a track record of success sending students to college and inspiring students to pursue STEM related careers. Help us continue to grow our team and develop the skills of our students!
