My students want to learn to sew! Home Economics class no longer exists, yet our children are still interested in learning how to use a sewing machine to be creative.
My students have come from all over the world for a new opportunity in the United States.
Our school is a magnet for the refugee populations that come to our city. We have over 60 birth countries and 30 native languages represented. My students are learning the English language while growing academically and artistically. We have strong programs for English language acquisition and academic growth as well as an award winning fine arts program that gives our students a chance to express themselves in multiple ways.
My Project
We will use the sewing machines to create a variety of fiber art projects. My students want to learn about quilting, crafts, fashion and how to create fine art with a machine.
Once introduced to the mechanics and applications of the machine, my students will be able to apply that ability towards creating simple pieced projects. As their command of the machine grows, my students will have the chance to design their own projects - functional and artistic.
My students have created their own fabrics with printing and batik. I hope to have them use the sewing machines to turn their fabrics in to their own designer creations.
My students deserve the opportunity to experience what others take for granted.
With the help of donorschoose, my students will be able to say that they have mastered sewing with a machine and created projects from patterns and of their own design. These experiences build confidence and can lead students toward a career path in the textile industry or simply lead them toward a healthy and productive hobby for their future.
