This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have the opportunity to make a difference every day for an amazing group of students with Autism. Many of these students are seen, but not heard. I believe that children should be heard and with your help, a Communication Builder speech generating device will give students a voice in the classroom.

I am a speech language pathologist in an inner city, high-need district.

Our district is large (33 schools) and our needs are great. I provide direct therapy services to 25 students in 3 classrooms in our Autism program. The students in this program are challenged daily to communicate and interact with others. They have a wide range of communication skills and benefit from the use of visual supports when communicating. Many of these students are non-verbal or have limited verbal skills and need speech generating devices to support their communication. I also provide augmentative communication support to students district wide. It's my job to assess students and our classrooms. I recommend devices that will enhance communication opportunities and provide training to the teachers on how to use the devices with our students and in their classrooms.

My Project

Speech generating devices give the students who communicate with pictures a voice in the classroom. These devices are simple, button operated devices. The student touches the picture and the device speaks for them! The devices are small and portable and can be used across many different learning environments. The devices are easy to program and a new message can be recorded within seconds. We had great success last year using speech generating devices to promote language growth for all of our students. Some devices are used for individual students while others are programmed to support class activities such as morning meeting. Our needs are expanding throughout the district as the number of students with complex communication needs continues to grow. With your help, I will add another speech generating device to our program and support the needs of many students in a classroom.
