Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In my years of teaching, I've often found myself agonizing over how I would help the most struggling students to achieve. This year I have a new dilemma- my students are geniuses! While many teachers would love to have my problem, I worry that the needs of these gifted students are not being met.

My students are second graders in a dual language program.

They are bright, eager little sponges who can effortlessly switch between fluent English and Spanish (I admittedly am very jealous of them!) They are predominantly low-income, and most speak Spanish at home. As dual language students, 80% of their school day is in Spanish. Students begin English guided reading groups once they have met a certain reading benchmark in Spanish. Typically at this point in second grade, there is about a one year difference between students' English and Spanish levels. Students are generally higher in Spanish since that is the primary language of instruction. However, this year about half of my students are 1-4 years ABOVE the expected English level! This is great news, but poses many challenges as a teacher.

My Project

In our classroom, students check out books at their reading level to read and practice at home each night. I currently do not have enough books for these high achievers to keep up the nightly reading practice they've become accustomed to with books at their level. The books I'm requesting are high-interest nonfiction books that will help my students to keep continually moving forward on the path to become successful, literate people.

Just as students with cognitive difficulties deserve to have their needs met in school, so too do gifted students. Your donation to this project will help my students to become better readers.
