My Students

Have you ever looked at a friend's desk and thought..."How do you find anything?" Have you ever thought about entering a desk in a messy desk contest? It is never too early to foster organizational skills.

Dauphin Island Elementary is a small unique K-5 school (population about 90 students) located in Alabama.

The school is a Title I school, which means at least 50% of the students receive free or reduced lunches based on the family income. Many of the parents support their family based on the income brought in by the fishing industry. About half of the students in the second grade class attend the school on a transfer meaning the school is not the child's neighborhood school. Many parents travel daily to get their child to school, which shows the value the parents place on the education their child receives. With the price of gas, the drive everyday does get expensive. The students are respectful, well-mannered, and extremely appreciative. They get along and always try to do their best. They have developed a strong a sense of community when together.

My Project

Organizational skills do not come naturally. They are a learned skill that if developed early enough, can make a person's life easier. I am proposing to create a "SURFER" binder that the students will use daily. It has two pockets and several tabbed sections. The pockets are used for daily work and homework. The binder contains a zippered pouch for money, signed field trip forms, the tooth that was lost during the day, and other important information. The tabbed sections are for class rules, web sites, quarterly skills, reading logs, test papers, and notebook paper with a pencil for easy communication between parent and teacher. When the students complete work, they will know where to place it rather than stuffing it in the desk. Parents will know where homework is located rather than in the bottom of the book bag. The SURFER will foster organizational skills and improve communication. Communication between school and home is made easier while organization skills are being developed.

My students need SURFER binders: Students Ultimately Ready For Everything Required.

By supporting this project, you are fostering home/school communication and helping children develop responsibility through organization. Life is so much simpler when everything has a place. Thank you for considering to support our project.
