My Students

I am truly blessed to work in a NYC Public school that supports the Arts. It seems that the Arts are often the first programs to get cut; yet we live in a culture that gains so much joy from theater, dance and music. Children flourish when they can express themselves creatively!

The students in my school live in a neighborhood of hard working families who still struggle at the poverty level.

We also have special needs students who find it difficult to interact with others and struggle to communicate. As a Theater Arts teacher, I am privileged to expose children to the world of culture and performance. Each year I work with young special needs students who barely speak, yet when performing a Reader's Theater Play and wearing a costume, they speak out with expression like I've never heard before. Struggling readers shine in my class as they use acting to communicate a character's feelings. My students practice mutual respect and create a safe environment where self expression is applauded.

My Project

I am focusing on my younger students with special needs and those who are English Language Learners. I am requesting a story board, puppets and interactive characters for the board based on popular literature. I want the children to use their voice to tell a story. I want them to take pride in using these interactive characters to retell stories and to create their own adventures. What an exciting way to teach literacy skills and to build confidence!

The excitement on the children's faces as they learn literacy through Theater Arts is something that drives me each day.

Please support this project: I will work my hardest to make the absolute most of these materials. I will encourage the children to be creative, to work together with their classmates and to use their imagination. I will not let you down!
