My Students

"Science is cool!" "My favorite subject is science!" My 5th graders love science, but there's never enough time for the really "cool" science activities.

My fifth graders are hardworking students who have faced many challenges in their young lives.

They live in a community that was devastated by a tornado just one year ago. They are active, smart, and independent, but the majority of my students qualify for free and reduced lunch and live below the poverty line.

My Project

I'm starting an afterschool science club, and we need materials to get started. We'll begin the science club by making tie dye t-shirts to wear on club days. We'll focus on many environmental science activities, like decomposing common trash, building solar powered cars, and testing various water samples. We'll also build Popsicle stick fans with the motors and launch pop bottle rockets (So cool! They fly really high!). We'll launch a forensic investigation to solve the Case of the Lost Skull. The Sony Bloggie camcorders will be used to record all of our experiments and activities so we can make an iMovie to share everything we've learned throughout the year.

Science is such an interesting and hands-on subject, but it often gets pushed aside, or is taught through a textbook.

Science Club will allow me to teach some really exciting lessons that we wouldn't get to try during the school day!
