Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Q: How do you get teenage boys who don't read a lot to actually come into the library and check out a book? A: Easy! Offer them sports books! Our school library would love to acquire 5 books about soccer, 3 about basketball, and one each about football, karate and zumba.

The choice of sports reflects the tastes of our students.

Our K-8 Center is located in South Florida, in an area that is predominantly Hispanic. No surprise that our kids are soccer crazy. That also explains the presence of zumba on the list. Our school offers after-school zumba classes, in fact. (Zumba = exercising to Latin pop music.) Our children tend to come from low-income households (over 84% qualify for free or subsidized lunch). Their parents don't take them to the public library much, so our school library is really crucial to their education.

My Project

These books should really appeal to our teenage reluctant readers. The soccer books are about national teams, soccer heroes. soccer facts and how to improve your soccer technique. The basketball books are about the Miami Heat (remember we're in South Florida!), the Boston Celtics and the Chicago Bulls. Then we have books about football, karate and zumba. Some 8th grade boys have been assigned to help out in the library.

They check books out to younger kids. They shelve books. But they rarely open up books and read...unless the books are about sports. So let's get sports books for kids like these. Over the years, your gift will be appreciated by hundreds of children. Please help our kids out!
