Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"South America... It's like America, but South." (Pixar's Up)
Ours is a Title I school, meaning that my students largely live in poverty.
The neighborhood is tough, and gang activity is common. Nearly all of my students are English language learners. Their families come from Central America, Mexico, Pacific islands, and the Middle East, all looking for a fresh start. They speak 5 different languages and come from numerous cultural backgrounds.
My Project
Despite the fact that my students come from all of the world, their views of what exists outside of inner-city Oakland is quite limited. With the new Common Core standards being so demanding, social studies is the subject most pushed aside. However, it is the one to teach us about the world in which we live and the people who surround us.
With one-to-one student atlases, students will be able to complete a 15 minute daily geography challenge that will greatly expand their view of the world. Where do we live? What is the difference between a state and a country? Where is the population most dense? How do political borders follow geographical features?
Many of my students feel trapped in the life cycles they see in their communities, unaware of what else is out there.
My hope is that with a greater knowledge of the world, my students will see beyond what is outside their windows.
