Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Starting middle school can be scary. Incoming sixth graders have new teachers, new classmates, and a new campus to get to know. With butterflies in their stomach, these students jump into their new academic world feet first. I want to make that transition a little easier.
My students are incoming sixth graders from various feeder elementary schools in a low-income neighborhood.
I haven't met them yet, but I know a little about incoming sixth graders: It is their first year in middle school. They are nervous. They just finished elementary school, so they are excited about learning. They're a little intimidated by our large campus, but they just need a little encouragement. They might forget to bring a pencil to school, because they have a lot on their mind.
My Project
While my students are in my classroom, I don't want them to worry about what is going on outside. I am asking for basic supplies, so my students can cross them off the list of things they need to worry about. I want to have pencils and erasers ready for anyone who needs them, pens for grading, and composition books for my students who are unable to purchase them for themselves. In our low-income neighborhood, that can be a high percentage of students.
With these supplies, my students will be ready for math!
They can focus on their learning, and not worry about what is going on outside the classroom. They will have the tools needed to do their assignments, regardless of financial background. They will be prepared for a year of discovery, teamwork, and exciting mathematics!
