Social Studies Super Stars

My students need social studies books to support our units on family, community and life long ago.

My Students

In our 1st grade class of English language learners and special education children, we strive not only to educate, but to give students' independence and encourage them to learn through reading. Our students love to read our social studies books together to share what they have learned.

Our eager learners come from poverty and do not have many books, especially on their level, at home.

Our class is full of eager learners. The children love to read during social studies time and often are found sharing the little reading material have. We try our best to provide appropriate books related to social studies to help our students learn better, but these books are hard to find and can be very expensive.

My Project

We will put these books directly in our students' hands by letting them read about a topic during social studies lessons. This independence will help students be in control of their own learning. The books will also make reading during social studies more interesting since we have been using simplistic books that teachers created on the computer years and years ago. We also will use these materials as read alouds to strengthen our students' knowledge of topics such as family, community and what life was like long ago.

Donations will improve our classroom by providing our students with grade level books related to our social studies curriculum.

It will make reading and learning about social studies more engaging by giving children the opportunity to read age-appropriate books related to our social studies lessons. The children will have a choice when reading since there will be multiple books on a topic, rather than the whole class sharing the few books that we currently have.
