My Students

We want to make class books in which we are the stars! We need a digital camera to take pictures of ourselves and use these pictures to illustrate the class books we create. We will be the characters in our books and we will write about ourselves! This will motivate us to read and write.

In our rural pre-kindergarten through second grade school, 55% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Our school building is over 50 years old and needs lots of attention, just as our students do. My students come to me from a wide spectrum of home environments. Some come to kindergarten not knowing any letters or numbers, some come with lots of experience and knowledge, and occasionally some come already reading. Most of my students have very limited access to technology. Our school budget does not have room for materials such as the digital camera I am requesting. Should this project be filled, an otherwise impossible technological avenue for learning will open for most of them.

My Project

We are going to make simple, repetitive books using photographs as the illustrations. For example, we might make a class book based upon the rhyme, "Who Stole The Cookie From the Cookie Jar?" On Zachary's picture page, it will say, "Zachary stole the Z from the alphabet!" On Justin's picture page it will say, "Justin stole the J from the alphabet." Or, we may create a book based upon Eric Carle's book, From Head to Toe. Each child will have a page that says, "I am a boy/girl. I can jump/hop/touch my toe. Can you?" The matching photograph will show the child jumping/hopping/or touching their toe. These personalized books will help engage my students in learning to read. My students will feel like real authors and illustrators because they will experience the process of creating a book from beginning to end with themselves as characters in the books.

If you support this project, you will have the opportunity to help create a solid foundation of the reading skills necessary for kindergartners to read while integrating technology in their instruction.

The students will have a permanent physical recording of their learning - the books themselves. You will have made a difference in the literacy lives of not only my class of students this year, but my students for years to come.
