This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

How would you like to learn about the relationships between temperature, pressure, and volume? Would you like to read about them in your textbook? Or get to collect pressure data points as you change volume in a syringe and change the temperature of a gas?

My students are all English language learners.

They bring a wealth of knowledge and experiences from all over the world: Ecuador, Afghanistan, Nepal, Myanmar, Liberia, Mexico, and more. They face a daunting challenge in trying to learn English well enough to succeed in the United States. However, they also show many developing talents and a general willingness to help each other learn.

My Project

With gas pressure sensors, my students will be able to collect actual data points and see how pressure changes as they squeeze or pull out a syringe. They will also be able to heat and cool a sample of air and see the resulting pressure changes. Through seeing these numbers, the students will understand the relationships between pressure, temperature, and volume at a much deeper level than they could through only reading about the gas laws.

The relationship between temperature, pressure, and volume is something that affects our daily lives, whether it is the drop in tire pressure with the arrival of fall weather or the sealing of canning jars in a pressure cooker.

I would love for my students to come to understand these relationships through data collection and analysis so that they can more deeply understand and apply these phenomena.
