Earth Science brings together practical elements of Chemistry, Physics, Astronomy, Meteorology, Geology, Oceanography and Paleontology. In today's world, there is a high need for geoscientists (with many earning well above the national average).
My students are both middle and high school aged, from inner-city environment.
Many come from backgrounds where they count on the school for basic needs (like food), as well as being supplied with everything they need for school. Many spend their time out of school trying to avoid the gang-violence of the area, some have experienced it first-hand. Many find it difficult to imagine a life better than the one they live now...not seeing how bright their futures can really be.
My Project
The simple things mean a lot. Having a calculator in the classroom means they will be able to do the math required of them in my coursework quickly, and with less chance of arithmetic errors. Success will breed success...if a student has to do calculations by hand in the science classroom, they are likely to skip questions, guess, or just give up an entire assignment.
The ability to get beyond what seems to many of us to be a small challenge can make a huge difference in how my students approach the course.
I am looking to get students involved in the future of what geosciences can mean to them. A successful experience in this ground-level course can lead to students being more interested in the college-level courses that will be offered to them (while in high school) as they progress through their education.
