My students are both middle and high school aged, from inner-city environment. Many come from backgrounds where they count on the school for basic needs (like food), as well as being supplied with everything they need for school. Many spend their time out of school trying to avoid the gang-violence of the area, some have experienced it first-hand. Many find it difficult to imagine a life better than the one they live now...not seeing how bright their futures can really be.
