Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Welcome to the Resource Specialist Program! I am a Resource Specialist Teacher in a high-need, urban elementary school. I teach students in kindergarten, third, and fifth grades. Also, 98% of my students are also English Language Learners, representing different countries, cultures, and languages.

My diverse group of students struggles with basic phonemic awareness, phonics skills, and with retaining new vocabulary. Our school doesn't have the resources to provide these students with specialized materials that will help them to master phonics and new vocabulary in a multi-modal, engaging manner.

It's time to create a legacy of readers that are leaders in the community. My students would greatly benefit from a set of phonics stamps, which will be stamped onto index cards, so they can target specific sounds, and track their progress on a teacher-made chart. The "Phonics Game Show" would motivate my students to practice their phonics skills on their own, so they come to class ready to show what they know. Visual vocabulary in different languages will teach my students that their language is acknowledged and does matter, and can be used to help them learn new vocabulary in English. Phonics Readers will be a part of a special library section for my students who can't yet read at grade level, but want to pick up a book and learn something new! Sight word flash cards will be used as a warm up activity to help my students increase the words that they can read.

Please support this project and give my students a chance- an important chance and opportunity to become a reader, which will enable them to become a leader in their community in the future. Your support will forever touch the lives of my students. Giving to this project will give the gift of reading to my students and their families. In many cases, the parents of my students can't read, so your contribution will begin a new legacy of literacy for these families.
