Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Help my students develop a passion for science! I want my students to see science as more than an academic exercise, but rather a fun, exciting endeavor. As a Title I school in a low-income community in New York, our limited resources make this a challenging proposition.

The majority of my students are English language learners and thrive when we use experiments to benefit their learning.

I still remember dissecting my first frog as an 8th grade student. I was instantly hooked. It was the first time I realized that science is more than an academic exercise, but rather an interesting, exciting endeavor with real life implications. You can imagine my excitement when during a goals survey at the start of the school year, my students expressed an overwhelming desire to participate in frog dissections as one of their top wishes. Since that survey was completed over 5 months ago, not a week has gone by without one of my students asking if I have found frogs for dissection. Unfortunately, while I would like nothing more than to allow my students to experience the sense of excitement and wonderment I felt as a middle school student, the limited funds we have are fully allocated to cover the bare essentials, like textbooks and school supplies.

My Project

My students need 50 frogs, 15 dissection kits, 15 dissection pans, and 7 frog dissection guides. In this exciting investigation, my students will explore the organs of frogs and make important connections to human anatomy. With these frogs my students will perform dissections and compare their findings with the human anatomy. This experiment will only help reinforce lessons and reading in this area.

More importantly, my primary goal is to help my students develop a passion and excitement for science.

I want them to see that science is fun and exciting, and encourage them to explore the world around them, both in my classroom and beyond.
