This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What would better help students to understand the relationship between temperature, volume, and pressure? Being given the equations and asked to plug in the numbers? Or getting to discover the relationship through graphing data points and finding the equation that fits the line?

My students are immigrants and refugees from all around the world--Afghanistan, Liberia, Ecuador, Nepal, Eritrea, Mexico, Vietnam, and on.

They face a huge challenge in trying to learn English well enough to succeed in the United States. However, they bring a wealth of experiences and knowledge from their time outside of the United States. They also have many developing talents and show a general willingness to help each other learn.

My Project

Science involves not just collecting data but also making meaning of the data. If students have access to software for graphing data, they will be able to model the data both graphically, using a line that fits the points, and mathematically, through solving for an equation. This will allow students to begin to learn to represent individual data points in graphical and mathematical formats. Having to take the individual data points and make a graph and equation will also give them a much deeper understanding of how pressure varies with temperature and volume. Using an equation and relationship they discovered through data will be much more powerful than using one provided in a book.

I would love for my students to begin to learn some of the skills needed in science for analyzing and representing data.

Being able to collect the data readings on a computer and represent them using this software would enable them to begin acquiring these skills.
