Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"When we heal the Earth, we heal ourselves," said David Orr. This is the quote written on the new mural in our school garden that inspires everyone. To help the students at my school continue to heal the Earth, we want to start a composting program!

Our students are very motivated to do their part in reducing waste and helping our school environment.

They recently helped begin a school garden which they visit and care for each week. Our students love to help plant and see the flowers and plants grow because of their hard work and dedication. They also are learning about recycling and try to reduce waste by recycling everything from milk cartons to extra photocopies. Our school population consists of many Special Needs students as well as English Language Learners who come from non-English speaking homes. Additionally, almost all of our students qualify for free lunch and breakfast.

My Project

We would like to add a composting component to our new school garden. Because we are a high needs school, all of our students receive fruit or vegetable snacks each day. It would be wonderful to save this waste, such as apple cores and orange peels, and add it to our compost to help our garden grow! Our students would be reducing waste, learning about the composting process, and helping care for our plants by giving them the nutrients they need. Schools have to get rid of so much garbage each day, and we want to do our part to help reduce some of that waste and reuse it!

Our students have already begun to change the community by devoting their time and energy to reducing waste, beautifying our school, and protecting our garden.

Beginning a compost program will intensify that effort and introduce them to more ways to help reuse, reduce, and recycle! Please help us continue to inspire our students to heal the Earth and heal ourselves in the process.
