Redefining The Importance of Math

My students need hands-on math materials to support more visual and tactile learning.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Math can open so many doors when the key is accessible. These students are scholars that just need to have access. They need to be provided hands on materials to support the curriculum. With these tools, they can yield better results on math assessments and in life.

These students are all from low income families and attend a public school in a high poverty and crime ridden community in California.

However, throughout the obstacles, the majority of them are very enthusiastic about learning and working toward achieving greatness. The district is in financial crisis. Therefore the students need more math manipulatives to increase their access to the curriculum.

My Project

The students will be able to utilize all of the material in various ways. The magnetic board will be used to teach lessons to the tactile learner, I will be able to place the manilpulatives on the board to illustrate to students how to perform each task. The test prep rings will help the students work in groups to quiz one another on standards based questions that will appear on the California Standards test. The illustrated dictionaries are the most essential of all. I was able to purchase a few last year and really watched how my students blossomed as a result of having access to a dictionary like that. All of the key concepts are covered in that book and the students are able to see a visual representation of each one. It worked wonders with my English Language Learners by providing them another avenue to access the curriculum.

The classroom slogan this year is,"The Future is in Our Hands." Having donations to fund this project will move us closer to achieving our goals.

The achievement gap exists. Unfortunately these children are at the losing end of this phenomena based on lack of resources. These students are excited about math. Having hands on and visual materials to bring those struggling students in could make all the difference in the world.
