Really Riveting Riordan

My students need books by Rick Riordan, including the Percy Jackson hardcover book set and the 5 CD set. My middle school students have become enthralled with his of books about Egyptian, Roman and Greek mythology.

My Students

My middle school students have become enthralled with the author Rick Riordan and his series of books about Egyptian, Roman and Greek mythology. These books have captured their imaginations and have turned them into avid readers.

My students come from hard-working blue collar families, many of whom work for minimum wage.

Many are from single parent homes. Our School was created to meet the educational needs of students following the catastrophe that befell Louisiana in the fall of 2005. In the spring of 2010, they experienced the economic and environmental effects of the gulf oil spill. We serve Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade and have several Special Education classes. 99% of our students are eligible for free or reduced lunches. But poverty and tragedy do not define our children. They have done much more than survive, they have thrived. They have consistently scored in the first decile on state-mandated standardized tests, excelled in athletics and been recognized for their musical and artistic talent. Literacy and reading are not just emphasized, but required. We believe that reading expands a child's world. We encourage recreational reading as well as reading for content in textbooks.

My Project

I am asking for a series of books that are of high interest to my students in middle school. The Percy Jackson and the Olympians series by Rick Riordan are their favorite. I am also asking for the other series of books he has written: The Heroes of Olympus, The 39 Clues and The Kane Chronicles. These books are well written and riveting. The stories expand on what they have learned about mythology and the ancient histories of Egypt, Greece and Rome. The vocabulary is expansive. They cannot put them down. I want these books in our collection so all of my students can have access to them. I believe that reading is much like playing sports; the more one practices, the better one becomes. Success with these books will lead to the broader range of reading that is required to succeed in high school and college.

It has been shown that students who read (even if it is only light fiction) do much better on standardized tests than students who don’t.

The habit of recreational reading should be established before a student leaves elementary school. I am sure this series of books will grab our students’ attention and turn them into life-long avid readers.
