Listening to a fluent and enthusiastic reader will help these students discover the joy of reading while improving their own reading skills. My students are sixth graders who attend one of the lowest performing schools in the area. Our school has been deemed by the superintendent to be a priority school, and our dedicated staff is trying their hardest to change that. Most students in my classroom perform far below grade level in most academic areas. In order for students to improve, becoming a fluent reader is key.

My Project

Our school is currently implementing a new independent reading program. It involves having the student's learning about different reading strategies, building stamina for working independently, and exploring how to read and discuss literature with partners, and it allows teachers to work with small intervention groups or individuals during this time. I am requesting an audio CD/tape listening center player and a variety of audio books. My students need a CD & Cassette Listening Center and lots of recorded books. Having a listening center with headphones and audio books will allow six students to choose that station for their independent reading times. Students who are far below their reading level will be able to listen to a fluent and enthusiastic reader and then the group will have read the same literature. Therefore, the group of students will be able to discuss, summarize, and write about the reading.

All academic areas involve reading.

If students cannot read, or cannot read well, they will have difficulty being successful in any other academic areas. I want my classroom to be a place where reading is a joy and a place where students will become lifetime readers. Any donation toward the success of our new independent reading program is greatly appreciated!
