My Students

A great book has the power to motivate, inspire, and even change a life.

Many of my students think they don't like to read, but I know they just haven't read the right book yet.

My Baltimore City 6th graders are an energetic, fun loving group of students. At the same time, many of them read well below grade level. In order to accelerate them to grade level standards in reading, we need to be immersed in engaging texts that are challenging, but still accessible.

My Project

The Lightening Thief by Rick Riordan would be a perfect class novel for our unit on Ancient Greece. It is incredibly engaging, so even my struggling readers would be willing to work through it. The vocabulary is somewhat challenging, but it is the same vocabulary that we will be working with in our partnered non-fiction texts. Not only will students love following the adventures of Percy Jackson, they will learn a lot about an ancient civilization at the same time. In addition to The Lightening Thief, this proposal also requests an audio version and five copies in Spanish, so we will truly be able to reach every single student! Finally, I have requested 5 copies of The Demigod Files, a Percy Jackson companion novel featuring full color pictures and extra information on each of the gods and goddesses.

Please encourage my 6th grade readers to stay engaged and invested!

I know that they can make great strides in reading this year; they just need to get "hooked" by the perfect book.
