Imagine sitting in science class and your teacher suddenly blows your mind with new and exciting information. How do you even begin to find out more? You could raise your hand, but the teacher can't possibly answer all your questions during that class. Oh wait! You can visit the classroom library!
I have a fabulous class of third graders that love to learn!
Our charter school serves a wide variety of students from many different countries. Our vision statement says that we strive to create inclusive excellence in public education. The mission states that we exist to foster a diverse and equitable community of youth and adults striving together for academic, personal, and civic excellence.
My Project
We have built into our school schedule a regular reading time during which our students choose books to read at their just right level. During this time students can read their library books, their personal books from home, or they can visit my classroom library. My non-fiction titles don't nearly number my fiction choices. This request includes titles that will support my space unit (Destination Space, The Sun, Constellations), my animal unit (Endangered Animals, Food Chains, Extreme Lunch!)), and my ecology units (One Day in the Desert, Icebergs and Glaciers, Exploring Ecosystems), to name a few. Being able to supply resources that can be used during lessons as well as during silent reading times adds that additional depth that students need in order to quench their thirst for knowledge!
Science is a subject that has such depth that there are times when a teacher can only scratch the surface during class time.
Having books nearby is such an easy resource to help meet those needs.
DonorsChoose is the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
As a teacher-founded nonprofit, we're trusted by thousands of teachers and supporters across the country. This classroom request for funding was created by Ms. Whalen and reviewed by the DonorsChoose team.
