Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Next year our school will focus on reading because the majority of our students are reading below grade level. I am the school's science teacher and I do not want science learning to be left behind as we work diligently to help our students become strategic readers.

I work closely with fifth graders who will take a standardized science test at the end of the school year.

They are excited about science and enthusiastically participate in hands-on science activities. Almost 80% of my students at my school are economically disadvantaged and more than 40% of the fifth grade class of 2011 will enter fifth grade reading below grade level.

My Project

My goal is to link science and reading in ways that matter. I will purchase sets of Kids Discover nonfiction readers that deal with weather and climate. Using these resources will help students deepen their understanding of weather and climate topics as well as develop students' strategic reading skills. I am confident that students will be excited to delve into the Kids Discover readers after conducting related hands-on investigations and activities. When students are reading I will systematically teach students how to learn about science in various ways, including instructing students in reading comprehension; monitoring their learning progress; setting goals and making productive choices; asking questions; and discussing observations, readings, and writings with their peers.

I realize that promoting scientific literacy is more than engaging students in nonreading activities.

I look forward to enhancing my approach to integrating reading and science. Please help me close the achievement gap for my young scientists by helping me purchase these informational texts about weather. I am sure that it will inspire my students to get wild about weather and understand the important role reading plays in science.
