My Students

Do you remember the first time you were asked to comprehend matter, the solar system, or life long ago? Science and social studies standards are challenging for second graders because they mainly understand concert concepts . They need opportunities to read on grade level and have hands on centers.

I teach second grade in a city school in rural northeast Georgia.

I have students, who range in academic ability and economical background, but are very bright and capable. I have just this year implemented science and social studies literacy during my reading block instead of just in the science and social studies block. This has been very successful. I would love to have independent reading level books and hands on centers to give them extra practice. During the reading block, I have stations that groups of students rotate through each week, while I work with small groups in guided reading. Learning stations provide me with a way to differentiate activities for reading, science, and social studies standards. These stations give students extra practice and review on science and social studies standards in a fun setting.

My Project

Providing books with nonfiction science and social studies concepts and center activities that support the challenging standards for second grade would give my students a fun and independent means to review and practice after the standards have been taught during the science and social studies block. The books and centers offer a variety of activities at varying levels of ability. These resources are far more effective and engaging than consumable practice sheets and can be used repeatedly. I truly believe it will significantly increase academic performance with these abstract concepts. Funding this project would provide my students with the opportunity they need to be successful in the demanding standards of science and social studies.

Providing the students an opportunity to make the abstract science and social studies concepts more understandable will lead to a love of these subjects as well as give them background information needed to pass state test, participate in science fairs, and be well rounded students.
