Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students struggle each day with the books they encounter. They find reading to be difficult and do not look forward to daily intervention lessons. They have little confidence and try to avoid reading activities when possible. They need help to see that reading is not only needed but enjoyable too.

My students are hard workers who struggle academically, especially in reading.

They attend public school in a neighborhood where safety is sometimes an issue. They are growing up in homes where they do not have access to books or educational materials. The majority of our families are struggling financially and receive free lunch. They do not have access to technology but are intrigued by it when seen in school. Most of my students are second language learners and have parents who do not speak or read English. They have a strong desire to succeed but lack confidence in the progress they are making.

My Project

I believe that a Nook Tablet will help my students to use technology to develop their reading skills. My students are very interested in technology and do not have access to educational technology such as an e-reader in their homes. The Nook Tablet would allow them to read hundreds of high interest stories at their own reading level in a format that they would find enjoyable and motivating. Additionally, the Nook would be used to engage them in reading comprehension activities that seem like games. These activities will encourage them to use the strategies they have been taught in order to find success. This resource will help my students to look forward to reading and see that learning can be challenging but also fun. Since the Nook is also a tablet, the students would be engaged in research projects and obtain information from the Internet. This will help them to satisfy goals listed in the Common Core Standards for education that will be challenging to a struggling reader.

This donation will make a huge difference in the lives of many children.

Students who read below grade level suffer not only academically, but often emotionally. This donation will provide much needed motivation and will introduce many of them to technology. Using an e-reader such as the Nook will open many doors for them and give them access to hundreds of books on their level, as well as reading games available on the Internet. It will inspire them to find success in an area in which they struggle.
