Many of my students are second language learners who do not speak English in their homes. They work diligently to decode the words on the pages of the books they love, but often have difficulty understanding what is read due to a lack of vocabulary and reading comprehension skills. These students receive assistance in school from their teacher and the reading specialist. In order to motivate them to practice the skills they have learned,I try to provide them with high interest books that are written at a lower level and corresponding activities to inspire them to continue to work hard despite thier obstacles. My students want to be good readers but are frustrated by their lack of success. I am trying to make the reading lab a place where students feel accepted and can take risks in order to grow. I strive to raise confidence levels with reading levels and so appreciate any donations of materials that can help this cause.
