This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Everybody loves listening to a good story! Audio books enrich a child's experience with books and can provide enjoyment to students while working on reading skills.

Our school has a very diverse population of student needs.

We are considered a high poverty school. Nearly one-third of my students are English Language Learners or are impacted by learning disabilities. Meeting the needs of all of these different students can be challenging when we have large class sizes (I currently have 26 second grade students)!

My Project

Research shows that listening centers build sight vocabulary, model reading fluency, provide access to higher level books, and much more. In the past, four students were able to listen to the same book at the listening center. But . . . we all know that students read at different levels and enjoy different types of books. Two iPods would allow me to differentiate my listening center to better meet individual student needs. Students would have opportunities to read books at their level and choose the type of story they want to listen to while working on important reading skills.

Students have always loved the listening center.

The addition of the iPod technology in our classroom will only strengthen this joy and provide students with more opportunities to listen to various books of their choice while becoming strong, fluent readers. Without support of this project, students will have to continue listening to the story at the listening center with other students whether is it at their level or something they enjoy. IPods offer choice and enjoyment!!
