Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Once upon a time, children were told the stories of Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Hansel and Gretel, The Three Little Pigs, and many other fairy tales. These stories are filled with promise and offer opportunities of creativity and imagination.

I am a speech language pathologist and the students that I service need help with understanding and expression.

I work in a public school which consists of general education classroom settings, as well as inclusion, and self-contained classroom settings. Some of my students also present with autism, learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder, and other developmental delays.

My Project

It is always my goal to improve my students' language skills to an age appropriate level, so that they may be successful within and outside of the school setting. I have had the privilege to read the aforementioned fairy tales to my students during speech and language therapy sessions. We worked on story elements, such as setting, characters, problem/s, and solution/s. We also worked on question comprehension and responses, understanding and retelling the sequence of the story, as well as discussing the characters' actions. The children loved hearing the fairy tales. They are always asking me to read the stories again and again. My students noticed the similarities between the fairy tales and pointed them out to me. They are actively engaged and I want to help them continue the excitement and love for fairy tales at home. The majority of my students come from low socioeconomic homes and I would like to be able to make all the differences that I can in their lives. My students need 20 copies of Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Hansel and Gretel, and The Three Little Pigs for lesson reinforcement.

As children grow, the stories they were told at a young age are understood on deeper levels.

Fairy tales are timeless. They are a rich part of many cultures and heritages. They seem to have the ability to unite people from all backgrounds with a single wish-let the protagonist win and the antagonist lose. Please help my students share these fairy tales with their parents, so that they can hear these stories with the ones that they love. Safe and nurturing homes help children succeed.
