Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Some would say we're a school of have-nots. State budget cuts have all but stripped away funding to classrooms in Arizona, and since our school is located in an economically depressed area of the city, we do not have the luxury of buying any classroom furniture, including bookcases and art supplies.

Our kids are the best.

They really are. Most of our students come from economically depressed areas of the central city and downtown area, and the struggles many of them face outside of school are almost more than I can fathom. Even still, most of them come to school every day and work hard to do their best. They know that education will be their ticket to a better life, and they take it seriously. That's not to say our school is not without its issues, but our kids have a lot of heart. They respect their teachers and they respect the institution, and they are always grateful for anything they are given.

My Project

I am lucky to have accumulated a sizable classroom library of young adult novels that my students enjoy reading. However, I have no bookcases in my classroom to display the books, and so they end up being piled on the back counter. The book rack I have requested will allow the books of our classroom library to be displayed much more prominently, and will hopefully entice even more students to peruse the collection and choose a book that might open their minds to reading. The markers and colored pencils will allow them to stretch their creativity and complete the artistic extension pieces that often are a part of the book reports they are assigned.

I want the books in our classroom library to be seen.

I want to make sure these books are on display and that my students know they are always welcome to check them out for reading outside of class anytime they want. I currently don't have a way to do this, but receiving a new book rack will certainly help.
