Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Using your imagination is not the only exciting part of reading. Being able to read and learn about real people, places, and animals is just as important.

I have a great group of third grade students.

They are bright and always looking forward to learning. We are part of a low-income community and have been provided Title 1 grants in the past, though this year we are not officially considered Title 1. My students come to school each day with smiles on their faces, and enthusiastic attitudes. I admire the way they are able to have positive outlooks on the importance of a good education.

My Project

In asking for more nonfiction resources, I am hoping to help my students build nonfiction reading skills. Nonfiction is generally more difficult to understand than fiction because the content is so domain-specific. So many of my students have not been anywhere else besides within a few miles of where they were born. Others have never left our city. I believe exposing my students to a wider variety of informational text will only enhance their love of learning, and help them become even more excited to pick up any kind of book and read.

So many aspects of life require reading skills.

While fiction books and stories are in abundance in my classroom, nonfiction materials would add a real-life facet to our reading curriculum. My students, who love to learn more about the world around them, would be able to learn and grow from the materials we are asking for.
