Putting Every Student at the Head of the Class

My students need individual dry-erase boards so they can script their answers, sketch their ideas and actively engage in the lesson!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In a world that celebrates technology at every turn, I've discovered that my students often perform just as well when they get out from behind a computer screen or power-point presentation and actively script their thoughts in a way that allows for personal expression and immediate feedback.

I currently teach Humanities to an energetic group of 14-16 year old special education students.

They are incredibly creative, eager to learn and also happen to be challenged by mild learning and emotional disabilities. They are fortunate to attend a public high school in NY that operates with the core values of providing a personal, human approach to meet students where they are, so they have made significant progress and most are on track to graduate.

My Project

These dry-erase boards are the perfect way to monitor and assess my student's progress! My students will benefit by finding out immediately if they are right or wrong. I will benefit by knowing whether they have mastered the learning objective or if I need to re-teach the material in a new way. I envision these boards to be used as a regular part of every unit. Whether we are reading and analyzing Drown by Junot Diaz or teaching the Common Core standards of developing arguments and counter-arguments, these white boards will allow my students to "talk" to me and their classmates. Imagine a room full of students furiously writing on their white board to answer a question posed by the teacher. They are motivated by accountability to their own thinking since they will "own" their thought.

If this project is funded, my students will have a tool that capitalizes on their strengths and increases the rigor of each lesson.

Their engagement will be immediately expected by a written response on their white board. My response can therefore be immediate and meaningful. This tool can and will be used by all students throughout all units of study, thus maximizing its impact.
