Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What happened to those days of playing outside until dark? Most of my students come with little ability to pedal bicycles because of a lack of opportunity at their homes. Developing coordination by using a scooter will affect them physically as well as socially and academically.

Our school is a small public school in a large district with limited resources due to our deficit in size.

My students are in school readiness program that focuses on language development. Some children have been identified as special needs with great potential. They are eager to experience new things and enjoy a challenge. Parents are an active part of our program by attending parent education classes, volunteering monthly, and attending parent workshops.

My Project

The children enjoy going outdoors to enhance social relationships as well as develop new physical skills. Our tricycles are missing pedals, but they are eager to learn how to ride them. We offer an apparatus to encourage physical and social play. Our playground is shared with Kindergarten students that would also benefit from extra learning tools. We would like to offer all of them new opportunities in a closely watched, caring environment. By adding scooters, the children will learn to balance and support their body with one foot while moving the other for motion. They will learn the importance of the use of safety helmets that should transfer to their experiences outside of the school environment.

Our classroom focuses on the academic, social and emotional aspects of children.

Although we work with them daily on physical fitness we need to develop new opportunities so they will be successful in their develop which will transfer to the classroom. It is important to have early intervention in all areas to that our children will be successful throughout their school careers.
