My students are an amazing group of kids, but they often struggle in math class. Without technology in the classroom, they don't have access to modeling software that would help them with difficult concepts in Geometry.
I teach at an alternative high school in North Philadelphia.
My students have not succeeded at traditional high schools in Philadelphia, but they're enrolled in my school because they want another chance. My students live in poverty and are growing up in a community surrounded by violence; but despite all that, they are smart, funny, amazing kids who still have hopes and dreams for something better than they have now.
My Project
Geometry is a difficult subject for a lot students. Even students who have typically done well in math class struggle with some of the concepts. Without technology, my students have a hard time making sense of many of the relationships between geometric figures.
There are many types of dynamic modeling software that give students a hands-on opportunity to explore complicated ideas in Geometry. With laptops and a projector, my students will have the opportunity to make sense of the more difficult concepts.
Growing up in the financially strapped School District of Philadelphia, my students have not had access to the same resources as their privileged peers.
By the time they get to my classroom, they are performing several years behind grade level in math. Laptops and a projector can help bridge that gap by giving them access to powerful modeling software in Geometry class.
