Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

"I am not a stereotype!" Every one of my students shout this with conviction when their probability for success is told through a faceless statistic. The numbers may not be in their favor, but the their determination to succeed is tenacious and their unique personalities are irrefutable!

Our urban public charter school is home to some of the most creative and talented youth in the city!

Their love for art is infused with a passion for change--and not just change within themselves--change for their community as well. Every spring we bring down the house with an exciting collaboration between dance, drum, theater and visual arts in a culminating production. Our youth have the audience rolling on the floor laughing one minute and borrowing tissue to dab their tears the next. They are truly exceptional artists, who also have the courage to address the audience and field difficult questions about their artistic process. Every year we aim high, but this spring we're pulling all the stops. The theme for this current production confronts stereotypes of black, urban youth in our city; which, is a vital topic for any urban school to address but resonates particularly close to home for our urban, black youth.

My Project

With the T-shirt making materials students will be creating positive statements that publicly and proudly show the world who they really are. Given the prompts, "I AM...," "I WILL...," and "I CAN...," students will respond with a phrase full of imapact that flips negativity on it's head. This statement will be written on with fabric crayons after the students have had the opportunity to let their personalities shine through in fun and vibrant tie-dye patterns. On the night of our performance and art opening students will wear their shirts and inundate the crowd with a reflection of their self-respect and confidence. They will be able to refute any negative ideas about who they are without having to say a word and will certainly make an impression no one will forget.

It's absolutely vital that our Middle School youth see positive reflections of themselves.

Without positive self-image and the ability to think critically about how they are represented in media and magazines, they could easily be relegated to a statistic. But with the right kind of support, encouragement and self-confidence, our students can outshine even our brightest expectations.
