Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Each year, 190 seventh-grade students conduct research experiments on a variety of plant species. However, with limited classroom space, only a small number of experiments can be conducted at one time. With an outdoor greenhouse, the students can perform experiments year-round

My students attend a gifted, high-achievement magnet school in California.

The seventh-graders enjoy the challenge that life science provides for them. As their teacher, my job is to develop lessons that meet their need for higher-level thinking skills. Hands-on experimentation has always been an effective way of teaching these skills. Kids today, especially in urban areas, need exposure to horticulture and plant growing techniques. With the discontinuation of our horticulture class this year (a seventh grade elective), students will now have the opportunity to learn hands-on botanical methods in their life science class.

My Project

Do you know where an artichoke comes from? What part of a plant is it from? Most middle school students who live in suburban areas of Southern California wouldn't be able to answer those questions. However, I believe its important for kids to know the value of our nation's agriculture system. How could our nation survive without it? Much of this responsibility falls on us, the educators. We in turn, need support from our community and outside resources to have the materials and supplies to teach our kids.

Allowing students to conduct research on plants, perform experiments, create innovative growing techniques and problem-solve ineffective methods, provides both critical and creative learning opportunities for them.

In addition, students will develop a greater appreciation for science and life in general. Through this project, my students will appreciate the amount of work involved in raising plants for experimentation, as a food source and for their aesthetic value.
