My Students

Just like Warhol, I believe that my students all deserve their own fifteen minutes of fame. My students would love to have the opportunity to work in the pop style and create their own portraits using markers, that have twenty five different skin tones and provide a level of sophistication.

I have a variety of students.

Students that are gifted artistically, as well as a number of students that have special needs. I wanted to create a project that would allow the students to create a successful project, as well as share their own portraits with their high school community. This could be accomplished by placing the completed portraits on my wiki, as well as placing them in one or more of the school display cases. Our school is truly a melting pot of many different cultures and nationalities. For their backgrounds in their portraits, I would like the students include pictures/drawings of their culture that they feel is representative of them and/or their family. I truly believe that the more the students understand each other, the more that they appreciate their differences.

My Project

The books and the DVD will continue to provide background information, as well as inspiration to future visual arts students for years to come. The paper will provide a rich surface for the students to develop their gridded portraits and then, have the ability to make them pop out with the black marker using the other markers to add color. Students will take a photograph of themselves and using the grid method (also viewing Chuck Close's work) will enlarge their portrait to take up the entire paper. The students can use the backgrounds of their portrait to tell a narrative about their own background. This narrative can include drawn, collage, tape transfer, and various other techniques that allow the student to share aspects of his/her background and/or culture with other students. My hope is to foster appreciation and understanding of various cultures and their different celebrations.

My project will have the opportunity to continue to give because students from years to come will have the opportunity to continue to use the supplies and materials.

I hope the students inspire each other to share important events, celebrations, happenings in his/her own culture. I truly believe that understanding fosters appreciation and that is my ultimate goal.
