Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My East Harlem students have infused poetry into their everyday lives by reading and writing poetry independently. I've noticed that their poems are often not rich in sensory detail. Therefore, I think it's time for them to spend some time doing observations. But what would be a meaningful thing for them to observe? Hmmmmm... How about the City in which they live! I'd like to take my students to the TOP OF THE ROCK, which is the observation deck 70 stories above ground at Rockefeller Center so they can experience New York City from a very different vantage point. John D. Rockefeller, Jr. first opened the Observation Deck atop 30 Rockefeller Plaza more than 70 years ago, to give something back to New Yorkers and their guests from around the world ? a place to appreciate and celebrate the city. One's perspective is altered when they view things from above. Panels of fully transparent safety glass ? the only thing between the kids and the City ? are crystal clear for unobstructed, open-air viewing. What better way to write city poems and heighten one's observation skills than by taking them to this very special place? Due to the financial hardships of my students' families, many of them cannot afford the ticket price to take them high above the City streets. I hope you can help me to bring this unique experience to my East Harlem fifth graders. Thank you, in advance, for your consideration of this request.
