Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Napoleon Bonaparte said, "A picture is worth a thousand words." My students are going to capture the very essence of themselves through photography in our first expedition of the fall.

My students are amazing kids who have had a rough go around in third grade.

They will be coming to me in the fall as fourth graders, and I plan on giving them the best opportunity to feel safe, engaged, and express themselves in the classroom. I will have about 30 students in my classroom (90 students in the fourth grade), many of which have shown various and somewhat extreme behavior problems in the past. They have not had a consistent learning environment in their years at our school. They have had teachers come and go in the middle of school years. Kids thrive on routine, and when that routine is constantly interrupted school can be a very hard place to be. I see these kids as being energetic, creative, and kind when given the chance. I can't wait to be that chance for them!

My Project

Our new school year, Fall 2012, will begin with an exciting expedition where students will be finding out all sorts of information about themselves. The expedition will cross content areas using math, reading, and writing as places for students to complete their project. The culminating project will be a black and white photo of a student holding a small chalkboard that has written on it a quote that is meaningful to the child. Next to the photo will be a writing piece about why they chose their quotation, along with their personal fact sheet. This is where the math comes in. Students will be solving problems about how old they are in minutes, how tall they are in inches, what fraction they are in their family, and other various facts. Parents will be invited to school to see the displays their children have made as our expedition comes to a close. In order to make this possible, my students need a digital camera to complete an expedition about why they are unique and important.

I want to celebrate how unique, wonderful, and different my students are.

Our school runs a program called No Place for Hate, and this expedition goes hand in hand with teaching students that no matter how different we are from each other, we can celebrate those differences. Celebrating uniqueness can foster a wonderful classroom community that will continue to provide students with life lessons and give them a safe environment to have fun while learning.
