Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The twenty-first century science classroom is changing. The classroom should be a loud, active class where students are discussing, debating and challenging each other. I want my students to be actively engaged in the learning process, not passively disconnected.
We are a Title One school with a high number of students on free or reduced price lunch.
We have a diverse population of students who have a variety of interests from Culinary to Speech and Debate, to the Visual and Performing Arts. My students who are in my Oceanography and AP Environmental Science courses are curious and determined to succeed. Many kids are the first to be college bound in their families. My students work hard and enjoy science.
My Project
New NGSS standards are pushing for a change in the way science is taught. It's a focus on the problem and not the answer. In the NGSS science classroom, students are challenged to solve problems and model to illustrate concepts by modeling them visually or using simulation. Student generated models can be drawn, peer reviewed and discussed using their entire table top as a giant canvas for learning. The chalk markers and erasers are a fun and engaging way of modeling complex ideas.
For years, multiple choice standardized testing was the norm in assessment.
With NGSS standards, I am trying to change the way my students approach learning, to not just memorize the answer, but to assimilate concepts and design their own solutions or models to a problem. It is my hope that my students will see that it is not about the answer, but the process.
